hours. new at noon, ktvu's sal castanedo joins us live to let us know the familiar names joining the effort. >> reporter: you said it. today at city hall some pretty big names participated in a meeting to try to secure the bay area's bid for the super bowl. now, bay area leaders are pulling out some nfl stars in its bid to host super bowl l. today mayor lee announced the 2000 new high-profile members of the team. >> it's my privilege to co a- announce -- co-announce two people, george receiveert and steve young, they -- seifert and steve young, they don't need introduction but i love to be able to mention them. >> reporter: both men say they want to help in any way they can to bring the big name to the bay area. >> it was, i believe in 1967 that the first super bowl was played in los angeles, california. it seems only fitting now that the nfl bring the 50th super bowl to northern california in the san francisco bay area. >> think about what we feel about the bay area. i mean, that's why it's one of the number one destination areas in the world. it makes total sense. they don't ne
of that that prap fell -- sh rappel we have -- shrapnel we've been talking about. sal castanedo has more about this. >> reporter: the hearn family is well-known in martinez. the father is a football coach. his children go to the local public schools. 12-year-old aaron hearn of martinez was one of the people hurt yesterday in the boston marathon attacks. his family says his injuries are serious but he's expected to survive. hearn who attends junior high is son of allen hearn. allen hearn is an alumy and p.e. teacher. today, the alhambra principal said before the race, the coach spoke of the excitement about his wife and the marathon. >> they were very excited that katherine qualified and allen and their friend went out to support them. >> reporter: the principal said she was removed to hear the coach and his wife and daughters were okay and is glad to know aaron's injuries are not life-threatening. she said today at lunch, students will write sympathy and get-well notes. >> good student, very well- liked in the community. >> you think he will come here? >> yeah, he will come here. >> reporter: now,
mentioned the story on "mornings on 2" today. new at noon, sal castanedo joins us live with ri action to the possible closures -- live with the reaction to the possible closures. >> reporter: good afternoon. you may see fewer staff and stations open if the budget is cut. the station in pittsburg is one of two most likely to be closed as part of a budget proposal made today to the county board of supervisors. today the board heard recommendations to trim the county's budget which had been hit hard by declining property values and tax collection. firefighters showed up to say enough is enough. last year, the county ordered four fire stations shut down. firefighters say closing two more will dramatically increase response times in an emergency. >> in a medical, obviously minutes and seconds count. and then in a fire emergency, this allows the fire to get bigger. i mean, obviously getting there to a bedroom fire and being able to keep it in the bedroom is much better than the fire spreading out through the house. >>> county officials say part of the reason is voter rejection that could ha
on the bay bridge. sal castanedo has more with why this problem was not a surprise to engineers. >> reporter: last month caltrans engineers say they did notice a problem with the ability of the bolts to stretch out during an earthquake but they decided to use the bolts anyway, saying they had no idea how big of a problem this would become. bridge officials say about a third of the 96 bolts installed broke after being tightened. a total of 288 bolts were in the span. now, they have to figure out the best way to replace the fasteners which they say is more complicated at this late stage of construction. caltrans is looking at testing the data and conducting more tests to determine what went wrong. >> we know that the bolts broke because of an excess of hydrogen in them. what we're looking for is kind of how and why this happened, simultaneously we're looking at how do we fix this. >> caltrans officials told meal the preliminary cost to fix the problem could be about a million dollars but say the bolt problem should not delay the planned opening

unregulated taxi-like startups are taking off. ktvu's sal castanedo joins us live with the results of a new study on this situation. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. if you live and work in san francisco, it's no fresh idea that a lot of people say they need more cabs. well, san francisco, the city of, is trying to make that happen. getting a cab in san francisco can be tough. >> it's really tough on a friday night or a thursday night if you are anywhere downtown or at a busy street. you will see 20 cabs go by you. >> reporter: a new report commissioned by the san francisco municipal transportation agency recommends adding as many as 600 to 800 new cabs within the next few years to fill a growing need. the findings confirm what many suspected. there are not enough cabs in the city. >> a lot of it is about bringing back or increasing people's confidence in the taxi system so they know they will be able to get a taxi when they need one, that they only have to call one to get one. then don't call three and they take the first one. >> reporter: the mta director says in ad

avoid 780 eastbound this morning. right now, we're gonna check in live with sal castanedo, find out what else is going on. i know, sal, if you have a better vantage point from your maps to see how far back this traffic extends. >> reporter: that's right. that's good you were there, tara. because we found out that cars are getting by but i still wouldn't advise it. the car is there at military west, where tara is. the best way to get around it, 80 westbound, eastbound 4. uses carquinez -- use the car carquinez bridge. use 80 westbound instead to eastbound highway 4. it will get you to the same area. you probably already know that. but the traffic is not bad on 4, at least not yet. steve mentioned there were some rain showers moving through the area as well. it's not great driving in this area of the bay. i also want to move it down to san francisco where we've had several crashes on 280, northbound and intersection in san francisco in and out of daly city. that whole area kind of tough driving. it's probably connected to some showers moving throu
of your bridges. for more than that, we'll check in with sal castanedo. how is it going? >> it's busy, as you mentioned, the bridges will be tough driving. all of the bridges, too. bum barren to and bay bridge -- bum barren to and -- dumbarton and bay bridge. northbound 101, that looks okay approaching the 80 split. southbound 101 looking okay down to the airport and the peninsula. the bay bridge is about a typical delay of 25 to 30 minutes at the toll plaza. no problems on the bridge itself getting into the city. we mentioned the san mateo and dumbarton bridge we haven't had any traffic problems. some slowing on 880 southbound from about 238 as you drive through to fremont and a new crash reported westbound 580 just east of santa rita road. that's a couple of vehicles. they are moving them to the right-hand shoulder. let's go to steve. >>> thank you, sal. >> you are welcome. >> did i dream i heard some rain? no. it rained a little bit last night. not a lot. still some low clouds around. kind of partly cloudy, east bay, south bay, peninsula. a little cloud cover left over. it's really

over to sal castanedo, who is checking out our traffic now. how are we doing? >> yeah, dave. we have a brand-new crash just reported in danville, northbound 680 before sycamore valley road. that one just came in. we also have a crash in san francisco that's new. northbound 101 at the bottom of the 9th street offramp. traffic is very slow on 101. the crash is at the bottom of the offramp but it's affecting traffic on the freeway. you can see southbound traffic also going to be slow for another reason. we're looking at slow traffic. one is a good -- 101 is a good freeway to avoid. let's move along to the bay bridge. we've had the backup all the way out to the macarthur maze about a 25 to 30-minute delay. in the south bay, we had a crash 85 at 17 northbound. the crash is out of the lanes. but 85 is very slow heading up to los gatos and saratoga. i would think that 280 might be a better bet. 280 is slow as well. if you have your favorite shortcut, this might be the warning to pull it out. >>> a lot of sunshine today. a little brees. windy for some -- a little breezy. windy for some. we c

to sal castanedo. >> we're doing pretty well on the b.a.r.t. system, just checked in with the dispatchers they say the trains are on time. let's take a look amount the traffic getting out to the bay bridge. you will see slow traffic here. it's backed up for about a 30- minute wait all the way out to the macarthur maze. it's seemingly okay once you make it on the bridge itself. you will be waiting to get on the span. northbound 101 traffic slow approaching 880. we had an earlier crash 80 near san pablo dam road. the crash is off to the shoulder, the traffic is backed up way back all the way up past highway 4 if you are driving let's say from vallejo to richmond, you will need extra time. 7:08. let's go to steve. >> sal? >> yes. >> i saw my first rattlesnake of the season on friday. >> you were hiking? >> yes, sir. one was a little guy. one was a big guy. if you are hiking, be careful. they are out along with other snakes. some of the higher elevation, mount tam, mt. diablo, you name it. they are out. just looking at mt. diablo, it's 61. they have a 49-mile-an-hour wind out of the north. at
